What is Filk?

Nothing can start an argument faster than trying to answer this question. The simplest definition is that FILK = Science Fiction folk music.

See the Filk 101 - History area for more information about this type of music

1) What’s New
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Before we start I just wanted to remind everyone that October 4, 1957 (Fifty years ago) the space race was stared, when the Soviet Union successfully launched Sputnik I. For those of you too young to remember Sputnik was the first man made artificial satellite to be launched into orbit.

We have gotten so much out of the space program and yet there are those who still say it was a waste of money or even that it was all a fake. So if you think that cell phones, satellite communications, the internet and more things that can be mentioned here are cool, then you have to thank that little basketball going around the earth and should let others know that you support the space program.

I do want to again apologize to those who had both problems communicating with me and had problems with orders from the online store. Having a melt down of the online store and e-mail system at the same time without question was a true disaster for the website.

I would like to thank Pat and many others who help me with my various e-mail problems. Pat was able to track the spoofing to a nasty company, whose name will not be mentioned so that this e-mail will go though. For those of you who have been following my soap opera let me just say that my server and personal computer were clean of any major problems and that the problem was indeed from an outside source.

As for the other problems I think that I have fixed them as well. See below for the report on the online store.

2) Online Shopping is back.
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

The online store has been turned on again. I have rebuilt the store from the ground up. There is no code from the old store. Because there is nothing from the old store it takes a long time to put the CDs into the store. At the moment I only have about 50% of my inventory visible for sale. Over the next few weeks you will see the rest of the items become available. You will also see more times available as my restocking CDs show up in the mail.

One of the drawbacks of everything being new this also means that you will have to sign up again to place orders.

New and improved features of the site:
* New graphics look
* Easier to navigate
* More sound files for more albums
* Shipping is tied into both the USPS and UPS shipping computers for real-time calculation of shipping prices.

The store is still a work in progress. Please let me know what you think.

3) The Pegasus Radio Show
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

The Pegasus Radio Show is running about once a day over the October 1 to 14th on filk radio. I want to thank Steve Macdonald and Erica Neely for their hard work putting the Pegasus Awards together along with getting Filk Radio all the audio from the writers and performers.

You can see when the show is playing at the following link:
http://www.live365.com/stations/filk_com/schedule

The shows will play once or twice a day during different times so that all times zones have a chance to hear the songs.

Due to changes in the Live 365 and their agreement with DMCA I can only play the songs randomly and only an hour worth at a time, this means that not all songs will play during each show. While not the way I would have liked to presented the Pegasus songs, it was the only solution that I could come up with that works with the software.

4) Pegasus Ballot – 2007 - voting information.
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

The Pegasus Awards were founded by OVFF to recognize and honor excellence in filking.

Any member of the worldwide filk community is eligible to win. Past Nominees have hailed from the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, Australia, and Singapore as well as the United States.

The nomination and ballot procedure is similar to that of the Hugo, except that one does not need to be a paid member of the convention to nominate or vote. Anyone with an interest in Filking or Filk music can place a nomination and/or vote.

The Ballot is now online!
http://www.ovff.org/pegasus/2007finalballot.html

Pre-convention voting is open until midnight Pacific Time on Monday, October 22, 2007. (This means that mail-in ballots must be received by that date, too.)

Winners will be announced at: Ohio Valley Filk Fest 23
