When did Filk.com get started?

Filk.com has been up and running for 10 years now. While moving the site I looked at my DNS information and reliazed that the domain was registered on 23-Jun-1997.

About the Site

Who runs this site?

This site was created and run by Eric Gerds

What is DAG?

DAG Production is a company founded in 1982 dedicated to the publication of Science Fiction Folk music, also known as Filk music. It is run and by Eric Gerds.

How did DAG get started?

Back in 1980 Chris Weber and myself while at the WesterCon, the west coast regional science fiction convention, discovered filk. This was the convention that the famous WesterFilk songbook was released. We soon hooked up with and started to attend the local monthly filksing. Chris wrote an amazing number of filksong over the next several months and gave copies to me. Unlike Chris, I had no musical talent to perform, and my singing could clear rooms. To give something back to the group, and to show that I did have some talent, I published Chris' songs into a book, called FAN-Tastic #1. It was released at FilkCon west (filkcon 4.1), held at the LASFA club house.

Why is it called DAG Productions?

There is a long story and a short story to the name. The short story is that it stands for Design and Graphic Productions. Remember, DAG started out as a song book publisher. I don't have the time to write the long story, so as me when you see me in person.

Did you know that DAG means.... (fill in the blank) ???

As a matter of fact I do know that DAG has a great number of slang meanings from around the world. In fact I'm sure that I know more of them than you do, because so many people from around the world have told me over the years.

How did DAG get the filk.com web domain?

My daytime job is working with computers. I use to run a BBS before the web was around. When it came time get get a domain I discovered that all combinations of DAG had been taken. (who would have thought), but filk.com had not. So I got it.

Does DAG run Con-Chord.

For those of you who do not know Con-Chord is the oldest running FilkCon and it is held in the Los Angeles area. But to answer the question, No, DAG does not run Con-Chord. Eric Gerds was one of many people who started Con-Chord and was chairman for number one, three, five, six, and seven. DAG has recorded at most of the convention and has put out several tapes from these conventions. The running of the convention has passed into other hands, however we do help out as much as we can with the convention.

You can check out this years Con-Chord at their website:
www.conchord.org

Why hasn't DAG put out more tapes/CDs?

I'm flattered that you have enjoyed DAG's tapes and CDs and want more. The problem is that it is very, very time consuming to make these products. Also, DAG is only a part time business. I do the tapes and CDs because I love the music, not because I am trying to make a living from it.

What is Eric Gerds background with Filk

Because there has been some confusion on my background I decided I should try and correct some of the information that has been posted about me. I discovered filking back in 1980 Westercon in Los Angeles. With the encouragement of Chris Weber I got more and more involved with the Southern California filking scene.

I was chairman for Con-Chord 1,3,5,6,7 and vice-chair for 2 & 4. I published Fan-tastic #1 back in 1982 and it was released at the famous Filk-con west. Since that first songbook I have also produced 8+ filk tapes.

I also run Filk Radio and the filk.com website.

Where here is the back of my house before October 1, 2007

Here it is a few day's later

And here it is at the start of November, looking back from the remaining part of the house.

And for the art picture it's pitchforks on the roof. For some odd reason I just love this picture.
